Italy Launches New Tourist Train Routes from Rome to Assisi and Alba

This autumn, Italy is set to introduce two new express rail services as part of its expanding tourist train initiative. These new routes will link Rome with the towns of Assisi, located in the central Umbria region, and Alba, a key destination in the northern Piemonte region. The initiative, developed by FS Treni Turistici Italiani, is designed to offer travelers scenic journeys through some of Italy’s most picturesque landscapes, combining convenience with the charm of traditional rail travel.

Highlighting Italy’s Scenic Beauty

The two routes are being promoted as "unmissable journeys" on newly refurbished carriages that will carry passengers through the rolling hills of Piemonte and the most enchanting towns of Umbria. The service provides a unique opportunity for tourists to experience Italy’s natural and cultural beauty in a comfortable and nostalgic way.

Express Route to Assisi

The first of the new lines, the Espresso Assisi, will operate from Rome to the medieval town of Assisi, a place famous for its spiritual and historical significance, particularly as the birthplace of St. Francis. This service will run every Saturday and Sunday from October 5 to December 1, offering travelers the chance to visit one of Umbria’s most renowned towns during the autumn season.

Departing from Rome’s Termini Station, the train will make stops at several notable towns along the way, including Terni, Spoleto, Foligno, and Spello. These stops provide passengers with the option to explore other charming destinations in Umbria, a region known for its rich history, architecture, and beautiful landscapes.

Promoting Sustainable Tourism

Italy’s new tourist trains are not just about offering new travel experiences; they are also part of a broader push towards sustainable tourism. By encouraging rail travel over car or air travel, the initiative aligns with environmental goals, reducing the carbon footprint of tourists while promoting slower, more immersive forms of travel.

Whether you are drawn to the hills of Piemonte or the historic heart of Umbria, these new train routes provide an attractive option for tourists looking to experience Italy’s diverse cultural heritage and breathtaking scenery.
